BMAS, Berlin

Extension of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs with office wing, exhibition space and day care centre in the centre of Berlin.

In a north-south direction, the building complements the existing block structure, creates a coherent development along the Spree and at the same time enables an open courtyard situation with spatial orientation to the north (Charité). The clear closure to the west / south is broken up along a spatial diagonal that fans out: at the main entrance, the building opens up towards the Spree. In the opposite direction, it opens onto the courtyard. A row of trees continues the diagonal and complements the spatial dynamics of the building design.

The building is organised longitudinally in line with the basic figure. The centrally located ‘vertical’ foyer is open to all areas, allowing for optimal orientation.
